We’re taking a closer look at Trupanion team members who go above and beyond in our series, Who We Are. Each issue we’ll be introducing you to someone who works every day with and for the pets who mean so much us. This time around we’re chatting with Sarah, a manager in the contact center who ensures that her team is equipped to help pet owners secure coverage for their furry family members.

What was your first role at Trupanion?
I started off on the Customer Care team, taking phone calls. When I researched Trupanion, I felt like this opportunity was too good to be true and I had to have this job.
Do you have pets?
I always had pets growing up. Right now I have a 9 year old chihuahua/dachshund mix named Ruby. She’s very feisty so she doesn’t come into the office. I also have a 2 year old Siamese cat named Milo.
What’s your favorite part about being here?
I love helping people. As a manager, you’re really focused on your team. I enjoy educating people and making others self-sufficient, as well as helping others grow to where they want to be.
What do you think has kept you here?
I would definitely say the people. I love the people I work with, but I also love the Trupanion product. I think it’s amazing, I think it helps so many people. I don’t think there’s anything else really like it, and that’s what really keeps me here. With Trupanion I feel like we have a unique product and we’re really doing something to benefit people.
If you had to pick a dog breed that represents you, what dog breed would you be?
Oh, great question. I’d probably be a chihuahua. I am feisty, I talk a lot once I get to know you – I can be yappy. Chihuahuas may not be known to be very smart, but I can watch out for myself. I have the right instincts that will make me move if I think you’re going to step on me. And I’m loyal. If you’re on my team and in my corner, I’m going to protect you.
Life Working with Others
What is your working relationship like with your peers?
It’s kind of like an extended family. I spend so much time with them, and I love everybody. I love the people I work with, and I think that’s usually why people end up staying here.
What effect do you hope to have on the people you lead? What’s your leadership style?
First, I want to be a friend and someone that my team can confide in and trust in. I also want to get to know them so that I can identify strengths and weaknesses, build on those weaknesses and turn those into strengths. My goal at the end of the day is to get each person on my team to where they want to be and help them find their dream job like my managers were able to do with me. I want people to be happy, feel fulfilled and have a purpose.
Who is your inspiration in life?
My inspiration in life is my mom, I am so lucky that she is mine! She was the best mom to me as a child – and an even better grandma to my daughter. She’s always thinking about other people, is always willing to help and lend a listening ear, and is very wise while still being very real. I could go on and on about her, because she is pretty cool.
Leaving Your Mark
To what do you attribute your success?
Hard work is the main thing. I’ve always been a hard worker. I’ve always wanted to do the best, not necessarily just for my boss – working hard makes me feel good at the end of the day. I love to see the change that I make in a company. Attitude is also a huge thing. People that are positive and can see the light can go a lot further than those that focus on the negatives.
If someone on your team asked you what they could do to follow in your footsteps, what would you tell them?
I would say be the best that you can be at your job right now. Do that first, and also think about what you are passionate about and what you want that next step to be. Then we can work towards that and help you land the role you want.
When you leave work, what does your ideal night look like?
When I leave work, my real job begins – being a mom to my five year old daughter and husband! I go home and usually make dinner for my little one who just turned five. Our nights are filled with walks to the park, art projects, and watching Frozen on repeat.
